The Reading Buccaneers Drum & Bugle Corps is proud to announce the addition of Mike Arena to the corps’ administration team in the newly created role of Community Outreach Manager. In his multi-faceted position, Arena will take a leadership role in the organization’s efforts to build, maintain and deepen relationships among local organizations, government entities, music educators and other partners. Drawing on his extensive experience in drum corps and the marching arts, Arena will also lend support to the corps’ operational and logistical efforts. In their earlier years, beginning in only their third year of existence, the corps won three VFW national titles and retired that crown in 1962. The Bucs then won the first DCA Championship ever held and have been DCA Champions three other times .

The Reading Buccaneers, formed in 1957, is a senior marching and maneuvering corps based in Reading, Pennsylvania. In their early years they were sponsored by the Greater Reading VFW Post 179, and are currently sponsored in part by the Ray A. Master American Legion Post 217 of Topton, Pennsylvania. The Bucs are also supported by many businesses in the Reading and Berks County area, and from the Buccaneer Alumni Association. Celebrating the corps’ 65th anniversary, the Buccaneers will close out the season at the DCA World Championships in Rochester, N.Y., over Labor Day weekend.
They ascended the ladder of success faster than anyone in senior drum corps history, including an amazing leap from seventh in 1978 to first in 1979. The Buccaneers have finished in the top three at DCA Finals 20 times through 2003. Mike Arena is a graduate of West Chester University of PA where he majored in Music Business. Since then, Mike has devoted his professional career to advancing Music Education in a multitude of ways. He has been actively involved in the marching arts as an educator and designer for several programs in southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey over the last 20 years. Most recently, Mike served as Director of the Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps and navigated a tour through DCI’s return to the field during the height of the pandemic in 2021.
Stagnant offensively, the Buccaneers (6-7) have not hit 23 points scored in nine straight games. The nonprofit musical organization was first formed in 1957 as a parade corps by various local junior corps and veterans of World War II and Korea. The group is a DCA charter member and competes annually for the national championship title. There is no shame in struggling on offense against the dominating San Francisco defense, but the Bucs’ issues with scoring points haven’t been limited to NFL’s best. Tampa Bay scores just 17.2 points per game, the fifth worst in the NFL and a shadow of their 29.0 points last season.
The Bucs are fondly known as "Balance in Blue" because of the wide range of musical selections they have presented over the years. A popular theory is that the name came from the hornline which set a tradition of marching with instrumentation mixed together, thus producing a much richer, fuller, more balanced sound. While Burrow did just enough last week to keep the Bengals’ winning streak intact, it was the defense that was the star of the show in a win against the Browns.
